| This piece is inspired by the tonal flows and movements of the Indian rãg Bhairav. Bhairav is probably amongst the most common Indian rãgs. It is traditionally known and treated as a morning rãg, but personally I feel that it, in addition to having the characteristics of sunrise, also beholds a nature which makes me feel sleepy and easily brings me into daydreaming. The piece as a whole was intended a bit like a game; playing around with very plain and repetitive ostinatos, and emphasising the simple but effective means of variation possible through different ways of producing tone and timbre. Also we have a clapping section midway which is very fun and always seems to amuse and impress people at our concerts. The ending is a real take off (an open improvisation section) and in this ‘recording take’ it came out as a very good example of our common rhythmic intuition. - Maria Jardardottir |
